Our pedagogy is rooted in restorative justice practices, the non traditional approach to incarceration & interactive learning to support participants in engaging deeply with the material and each other.
The college-level course covers trauma-informed care, youth development, history of mass incarceration and a social justice framework, for career advancement. Students engage in activities, role play exercises, and develop lesson plans and strategies that they use in their daily work with young people while navigating them to health services. Each member is trained in preventive services, CPR, and lifesaving skills that are needed within the community when employed as peer navigators. Presents:
FIRST ARRESTS
Introducing our newest project with inspiration from Five Mualimm-ak - FIRST ARRESTS, documenting the human stories of where it all begins; the first contact with policing and the justice system that defines relationships and understanding. Between 2013 and 2018 more than a quarter of a million children between 10-12 were arrested, 30,000+ were younger than 10. The number of children that are intimidated, stopped and cuffed without formal arrest, dwarfs these numbers. After age 12 these numbers only increase drastically, calling for change - and shaping the minds of our youth and setting the foreground for a relationship with justice in some form that causes undue harm. It’s our goal to humanize these stories and tell them broadly. We invite you to tell your own story as part of the larger mission of sharing the story of how youth come to know policing and confinement in America.
The Young Adult Perspective Project is a multiplatform SafeSpace for Young Adults to talk about their impact in the criminal justice system, from Young Adults for Young Adults. YAPP brings topics that impact Young Adults today to the frontline, healing takes understanding, Understanding begins with communication. #wemakechange by amplifying the valid voices of Justice Impacted Young Adults.
The Young Adult Perspective Project is a division of the Youth Anti Prison Project.
